Salt and Sage produced Hamlet in repertory with Romeo and Juliet in the summer of 2022. The production focused on the love story between Hamlet and Ophelia and how bonds of love are broken and strengthened by grief. As Oregon Arts Watch observed in adding Hamlet and Ophelia singing Sufjan Steven’s Fourth of July to one another at the top of the show “Dean carves out this profound, tender place for the pair to exist. A heavenly place apart from the violence, lies, and confusion in the script. By doing this, Dean seems to say, Yes, Hamlet’s love for Ophelia was and is in fact real. It was an eerily beautiful way to frame their tragedy.”
