Playwright’s Note
When the events that unfold here took place among my friends and I in our early 20s, I doubt any of us would have described them as comedic. Instead, they felt like an ongoing, inexplicable trainwreck. It was only at a few decades’ remove that I could view them with any clarity and have a good laugh.
When the first draft of this play was read in 2019 at the Shoebox, it made sense solely to me. Audience members politely complimented a few of the jokes, but mainly seemed befuddled. This struck me as odd, since, to my mind, the mystery of why my friend group’s relationships had burned to the ground all those years ago had finally been solved. Over the pandemic, with the help of the inimitable Asae Dean, the script was finally fashioned into something legible: the edges of hurt had been sanded off my memories, the characters almost all became trans, and we could be happy fools at last.
College students, experiencing that first flush of freedom away from family, naturally experiment – all of life can feel like trial and error, and one’s nature is flexible. Conditions are perfect, then, to fall in love, one might say . . . What possibly go awry?
