Tears and Glitter *
Welcome to the world premiere of Tears and Glitter by Mikki Gillette! We’re so glad you are here.
Playwright’s Note
The people currently persecuting the trans community will likely never be held accountable – those politicians, opportunists, “journalists” and others who’ve fomented a moral panic while steadfastly ignoring the voices of trans youth, their families and the physicians who might provide actual perspective and experience to the discussion. Where does that leave us, then? The trans people who, weathering great adversity, have managed to build lives for ourselves, and now observe as a wave of abject hatred looms over our heads?
This play was written in 2023 and is already dated in some ways. The mentions of passports and DEI ring strangely, and the bills proposed within a single red state legislature here can feel quaint in scope, as our current federal administration seeks to define trans people out of existence. Likewise, nearly every word spoken by Collier today feels prescient in a way none in his circle can comprehend. What’s timeless in the piece, I hope, is the sense of purpose each of the characters find in opposing injustice and cruelty, and engaging in community, no matter how messy things become.
The ways in which trans people change our bodies, pronouns and IDs are nobody’s fucking business. Until that’s the consensus view, though, groups like the one you’ll watch here will be taking care of each other, and fighting for the things we know are true, because our need to live authentically will never be outstripped by the prejudice of those who hate us.
