Asae Dean produced How I Learned to Drive by Paula Vogel in the fall of 2012. Vogel’s modern classic reimagines Lolita from the perspective of the surviving woman. Li’l Bit has ambitions beyond her hometown and the only family member who nurtures those ambitions is her Uncle Peck. However he has his own demons and his intentions towards her are hardly innocent. Dean staged the show under universal lighting conditions so that Li’l Bit and the Chorus could directly address the audience. The stripped down staging extended to the soundscape of the play with the actors performing all of the pre-show and accompanying music throughout the play as the Chorus served as jukebox and car radio.
